A New Writer? Answer These 3 Questions

These Three Questions Are the Most Asked in Writing Groups

I monitor over thirty writing websites on Facebook and elsewhere, and I have come to realize that many new writers are asking for free help. I also realize many new writers are afraid to ask for help because they are inundated with upsells constantly. This will not happen for a new writer here. I am not trying to sell you anything. If I do fire me immediately!

Most writers want more than a step-by-step plan. It is easy to list the steps, do step A, do step B, and do step C, but harder to show and explain how a new writer completes each step of the plan. The best part is you do not have to listen to me. My advice is free and you live in a free country.

I will be using my own published novel Gunny Mac Private Detective Trouble in Chinatown as our workbook to show you my own writing experience with the hope you can avoid my mistakes. My genre is hard-boiled private detective novels set in the the1940s… somewhat like Raymond Chandler, Charlie Chan, and Michael Shayne. My next novel comes out in a few months, Gunnymac Private Detective Trouble in Cleveland.

All my advice comes from my own experience based on five years of researching, writing, and publishing a  novel. I will be covering three major areas of concern with most writers.

The top problems most people want answers to concern the following:

Where do I begin?

How do I write when I have no time?

How can I write, publish, and market with little money?

I will now attempt to answer these three very hard questions because if you don’t like my answers you probably will not like my free writing courses and can stop now and not waste your time.

Where Do I Begin?

Sprint away from the people who give you the following free advice…just start writing!

That is like getting in your car living on the East coast, pointing your car West, and saying California here I come. No map, no GPS, no destination, no idea the amount of money you will need, just keep the sun in front of you. You can imagine the cost, the length of time it will take you to get there…if you ever do. You must know how to start…you must have a plan of action…you must be prepared to learn. The next few posts will show you how to start.

Do not write like that! I will help you start your writing journey to minimize time, money, and effort to write your novel.

How do I write when I have no time?

You can’t write when you have no time. Impossible! You have to make time…but you know it is impossible to MAKE time. God gave us 24 hours in a day. That is all we have. If you can make extra hours tell me so I can use them. If we only have 24 hours in a day and we have 100 different responsibilities during our 24 hours what must you do?

As a career infantry officer, I worked 70 to 80 hours per week. After my career, I wanted to be a high school teacher and went back to college completed 120 undergraduate hours and 120 graduate hours while working full-time. I had all the other 100 different responsibilities like you.

I wrote in the morning, on my lunch hour, and late at night. I studied not only my academic studies but books on how to write fiction, listened to podcasts, went to writer conferences, etc. You can do it. What the mind can conceive and believe in, it can achieve.

How can I write, publish, and market with little money?

As a new writer, you can write with very little money. You can get a writer’s education on the internet (like my website), you can go to the library and read free books, you can read books in your genre (which you must do), you can practice writing without a cost. You can get your novel published through Kindle for free. But the free stops here!

Before you get your book ready to publish to kindle…$$$$$$$$. It costs $$$$$$. Book cover, four different types of editing, book cover, formatting, ISBN’s and marketing. Not counting all the other expenses I go into later.

Sorry… but you will have to spend money if your wish is to have a viable author career and make money. There is a reason most self-published authors never make any money or sell any books. I know all about that! I learned at a great cost to me!

I will help you spend the least amount of money…is that a deal or what!!! You can always contact me via my website if you have questions…I answer them believe it or not!
